If you are going to do any traveling at all on your bike then you're going to have to get yourself some decent luggage to carry all your gear.
If you are just starting off on a motorcycle and just want to take things slow and spend as little as possible then you can get away with purchasing a tank bag and tail pack. These two items will be enough for you to get by on short trips and the tank bag in particular is invaluable all year round for carrying all sorts of things when you are out and about.
You really don't have to spend all that much money on motorcycle luggage, which is nice. UK companies such as Oxford produce very economical kit such as its First time range at great prices. With a years warranty they may not be made to last a lifetime but they will give you a taste of the freedom available to you when your bike is capable of carrying luggage.
When you get serious about your biking and want to go on longer trips you can consider getting more expensive equipment and splashing out on panniers to enable you to carry the kitchen sink with you when you are touring across the continent.
